Find out about a website that specializes in ways to inspire.

Started in 2000 by Chris Dunmire, Creativity Portal is a website that is a treasure trove filled with lots of inspirational material that could jump start almost anyone stuck in a creative desert. However, like all treasure, it needs to be dug out and sifted from its rather messy layout.

For a website that boasts about sparking the creativity in us, the layout is sorely lacking in creativity. Fonts are the normal fonts that you see in a normal website and though it is rich in content, there is too much advertising clutter choking it. The advertisements can be quite a turn off and rather misleading but once you get pass that and look deeper into the content, you are on your way to finding treasure. Follow the tabs on the main tool bar to be brought to the different aspects of creativity, such as art and crafts, writing and prompts, creativity coaching, and authors. From clicking on the different tabs, you will have to scroll down quite a bit and click a few more times before you get to the desired page that you want to see.

Though the layout of the website is rather stale and tedious to navigate, the strength of this website is that the writers and contributors have an interesting perspective on creativity. From interviews with different creative folks to creating a nature journal, the wide variety is certain to pique curiosity and spur you to do at least something instead of just sitting down and reading about it on the web.

As someone who writes quite a bit, and who has a love for music, words, and photographs, I completely understand what writer’s block is and when inspiration runs thin. As I sifted through the website, I am reminded of one very important fact, and that is no matter how talented we are, there comes a time when even the most prolific of writers are just unable to write without cringing. There comes a time when all of us have to walk through a desert, and sometimes, nothing really works but taking a step back and just allowing inspiration to come again (as recommended by one particular contributor on the website).

With this thought, I was further reminded of a particular verse in Exodus 31:1-4. It says, “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts – to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze…’”

Sometimes as Christians, we tend to think that the best of the creative circles are those who are completely worldly and in the world, yet we fail to recognize that all of us are made in the image of God (Gen 1:27), and that God definitely trumps all in the creative department of this universe. God is interested in the creative. Just look around at nature. Or better still, take a good look at yourself in the mirror and marvel in awe at how He created such an awesome masterpiece. If God could choose Bezalel, to have the skill and ability in all crafts to make not just typical designs, but artistic designs for Him, I am convinced that God has bestowed upon the Christian community the same amount of creativity if not more than what the world is seeing today.

Read through the website, get inspiration and catch a different perspective on things from the site. But ultimately, remember to look back to God and He just might surprise you in a way you have never imagined.
